Multicast and Unicast Music on Hold

Issue: Multicast and unicast music on hold doesn’t over the PSTN.

Platform: Cisco ISRs version 15.0.

Solution:

Disable “IP CEF” in the router.

enable
config t
no ip cef

Cisco Express Forwarding is mainly used to increase packet switching speed thus disabling “IP CEF” is not recommended. Another workaround is to set Duplex Streaming Enabled to True under Service Parameter (Cisco CallManager).

Duplex Streaming Enabled parameter under CUCM's service parameters.

Group Pickup on Call Hunt Group

Issue: Phones can’t pickup any calls on a phone that is member of a call hunt group. There is no parameter enabling this basic feature under enterprise parameters, service parameters and hunt pilot.

Platform: This is only applicable on Cisco Unified Call Manager versions 7.x to 8.x.

Solution:
1. Login to Cisco Unified Call Manager.
2. Go to System > Enterprise Parameters > Locate Cisco Support Use and put this string CSCsb42763 there.

Cisco Support Use parameter under CUCM's enterprise parameters.

3. Commit the change by pressing the Save button.
4. Go to Call Routing > Route/Hunt > Hunt Pilot > select the appropriate hunt pilot number.
5. Call Pickup Group option is now available under Hunt Forward Settings.

Call Pickup Group under Hunt Pilot.

Protecting Against Tampered Cisco IOS Software

Cisco Systems added a new feature called digitally signed IOS softwares starting on version 15.0(1)M. This protects against tampered Cisco IOS software distributed over the Internet. If someone downloaded this file and then loaded it on their Cisco devices that supports that image opens their network to attackers. Furthermore, attacker starts mapping your entire network, scanning open ports, running exploits and finding vulnerable systems. Unfortunately, this feature is only suppoted for Cisco ISR Generation 2 routers (19xx, 29xx and 39xx) and Cisco Catalyst 4500 E+ series switches running IOS XE software. Information about this feature is detailed on this link.

Cisco VM-Integration with SRST

In this blog entry I will only discuss how VM-integration’s call routing works. In a nutshell, VM-integration is another technique used to access (send and receive) voicemail system in a centralized setup usually deployed at the headquarters or Data Center when the IP WAN is down. During the IP WAN outage, the branch router engages its Survivable Remote Site Telephony (SRST) feature either using Call-Manager-Fallback or CME-SRST. VM-integration supports access to user’s voice mailbox on these situations – direct voicemail access (by pressing the message button on an IP phone), busy (all lines are engaged) and no-answer (ring timeout exceeded).
